Is This November the Right Time to Re-Pipe? - Ballard Plumbing Heating & Air Conditioning
When to repipe

Regarding home maintenance, pipe health is one of the more neglected aspects. Unless there’s a leak or clog somewhere, most people don’t even think twice about their plumbing.

But your pipes and the plumbing are essential aspects of your home. Since that’s where all the water you use travels through, it’s necessary to have them checked regularly!

Sometimes you can solve pipe issues by yourself or with the help of a professional. In other cases, there isn’t anything that can be done to save the plumbing system. But how can you find out?

Here are five signs it’s time to re-pipe your plumbing system:

Your water tastes strange

Water shouldn’t have any discernible taste to it. So if you notice that your water tastes metallic or bitter, it could mean something is wrong with the plumbing system. Maybe the pipes have rusted, as rust is often associated with a metallic taste. The pipes will need to be replaced to get rid of the taste (and the harmful health effects related to drinking water with rust!).

Your pipes are constantly leaking in different places

Pipes will understandably become less durable with age. And they may eventually begin to develop tiny holes and cracks.

Left unchecked, these little holes will allow water to escape. And this might seem like a relatively minor problem at first, but it can quickly become an expensive one to fix.

So, if you constantly experience leakages in your home, it’s probably time to consider repiping.

Your water isn’t clear

Rusted pipes tend to change the color of the water that runs through them. If you notice your water has a red tint, it’s time to replace the pipes in your home.

Your water pressure is low

Leaky pipes allow water that should be coming out of your taps to drain out elsewhere. And depending on how big the cracks in your pipes are, a ton of water is probably being let out. This is one of the leading causes of low water pressure. Not to mention that if your pipes are corroded, they will most likely reduce water pressure by restricting it from flowing freely.

Sometimes fixing these issues are more expensive than just starting over. So if you deal with low water pressure in your home, then maybe it’s time to start looking at some new pipes.

Your pipes are made of lead

Newer plumbing systems don’t use lead pipes due to how harmful lead is to your and your family’s health! But older homes will often have lead as their primary pipe material. Lead poisoning is known to cause diarrhea, impaired kidney function, and anemia, among other issues. And the best way to decrease the chances of lead poisoning through water is by removing lead pipes from your plumbing system.
